Stella Nkomo: 'Race', ethnicity, identity and difference in 21st century organizations

15/04/2010

Professor Stella Nkomo looks at how ‘race’, ethnicity and cultural identity manifest in today’s globalised workplaces. In the positive vision of the global village, people of different cultures intermingle across boundaries, use technology to bridge physical distance, exchange goods, and leverage capital and human resources. In a contrasting vision, cultural harmony and integration remain illusive. In the global workplace, identities continue to be sources of conflict, marginalization, and inequality.
A diverse panel will give a reaction on the lecture and reflect on the role of ‘race’ and ethnicity in Flemish organizations. How can organizations think about and shape transformative strategies for workplace inclusion?

Stella Nkomo is professor at the department of Human Resource Management at the University of Pretoria in South Africa. Between 2000 and 2009 she was a professor of business leadership at the University of South Africa’s Graduate School of Business Leadership. Before moving to South Africa, she was the head of the Department of Management at the University of North Carolina in the United States. Her work on race and gender in organizations, managing diversity, leading change, and human resource management has been published in numerous top journals and books. Stella Nkomo is an outstanding academic, an innovative thinker on diversity in organizations and a frequent speaker at many international fora.

The Faculty of Business Economics and the 'Ronde tafels van de Interculturaliteit' sponsor the event. Participation is free but on-line registration before April 6 is required.
