Feminisms from the Peripheries

“Feminisms from the Peripheries” is a special event that will take place in Brussels, focusing on the relation between (1) language and feminism, how discourse shapes our realities and has been used to perpetuate discriminations and (2) on the concept of intersectional feminism and on how these topics are addressed in diverse and complex societies in Europe and the rest of the world.

The discussion will revolve around the issue of gender equality and the role of intersectional feminism in transforming our societies into more inclusive, socially, and environmentally just places for everyone, setting the tone for the discussions and giving new meanings to “peripheries”.

We will use a feminist lens to discuss inequality, unrecognized identities, peripheral locality, and uneven power structures as factors of oppression that Europe’s minorities and minoritised nations continue to struggle against.

We will also underline the centrality of intersectional feminism for those in the peripheries, here understood both as a geographical and a political concept connected to access to decision making, as a way of embracing diversity and inspiring cross-cultural solidarity.

The speakers will share their personal experiences and views on challenges and possible feminist futures. They will talk about discrimination, sexist language, and women’s self-determination, among other issues.

The discussion will underline the importance of creating and continually striving for a fair society built on gender equality, representing a vision for an inclusive and intersectional feminist future that needs to be heard.
