Feminist Movement Building: Rewriting the Rules in the Arab Region & Beyond
The Coalition of Feminists for Social Change (COFEM), the Arab Institute for Women, VOICE and the Global Women’s Institute are pleased to invite you to join the Zoom webinar on “Feminist Movement Building: Rewriting the Rules in the Arab Region and Beyond. »
Women’s movements have been at the forefront of some of the most successful uprisings of our time, and have played a crucial rule in generating social and political change. The current global public health emergency both exposes the failings of dominant patriarchal structures, and opens new avenues for resistance and transformative change.
Feminist movements have long led the way indirectly responding to violence against women and girls in their communities and beyond. But what does this look like in the context of COVID-19 and its aftermath? How has feminist activism evolved and adapted to the challenges and opportunities presented by the emergence of digital technologies and social media? How has this enabled our movements to become more global? How is this affecting, or being affected by, the current shift to online and mobile forms of outreach and service provision?
The session will focus on the lived experiences of women activists who have been playing an active role in the fight for women’s equality and inclusion in their respective regions. COFEM members and other activists will speak about their activism as well as discuss the key role that feminist movements are playing in achieving meaningful change in their communities, countries and beyond, and what we can do to support their efforts now.
Join us in an interactive conversation and share your own experiences navigating feminist movement building during the current crisis.
The Coalition of Feminists for Social Change, or COFEM, is an advocacy collective of thought leaders, activists, practitioners and academics working globally to end violence against women and girls. COFEM prioritizes women-centered and women-led initiatives grounded in intersectional feminist analysis.
The Arab Institute for Women (AiW) advances women’s empowerment and gender equality nationally, regionally and globally through research, education, development programs, and outreach. AiW works at the intersection of academia and activism.
VOICE is a global organization confronting one of the world’s oldest and most widespread human rights abuses: violence against women and girls (VAWG). VOICE works in some of the most challenging environments in the world, which are also often the most precarious for women and girls. VOICE shapes international action by deploying a diverse, seasoned team with in-depth contextual knowledge to ensure that humanitarian responses are safe and inclusive of women’s and girls’ participation.
The Global Women’s Institute (GWI) conducts applied research, advocacy, and training to better prevent and respond to violence against women and girls in humanitarian and development contexts. We partner with women’s rights organizations, researchers, NGOs and UN agencies to share capacities, knowledge, and resources for safe and ethical GBV research, monitoring and evaluation.
