Humanists in the hood – Sikivu Hutchinson

The European Humanist Youth Days will be closed in style on 30 October at the BOZAR in Brussels. This evening will be dedicated to the EHYD’s themes of diversity, solidarity and inclusion, with Black Feminism as the focus for the evening.
The young thinkers from the Virtual Ateliers will share their results and policy advice.
Sikivu Hutchinson will give a lecture on her book Humanists in the Hood: Unapologetically Black, Feminist and Heretical.
We will close with a treasure from the Belgian music scene: Charlotte Adigéry X Bolis Pupul.
Sikivu Hutchinson, Ph.D. is an educator, author and playwright. She is a recipient of the 2020 Harvard Humanist of the Year award and received her doctorate from New York University. Her books include Humanists in the Hood: Unapologetically Black, Feminist, and Heretical (2020), Imagining Transit: Race, Gender, and Transportation Politics in Los Angeles (2003), Moral Combat: Black Atheists, Gender Politics, and the Values Wars (2011), and the novel White Nights, Black Paradise (2015), on Peoples Temple and the 1978 Jonestown massacre. She also wrote, directed and produced a short film and play of White Nights, Black Paradise and was awarded a “Humanities For All” grant from the California Humanities Foundation in 2019. Her short plays Grinning Skull and Narcolepsy, Inc were featured in the Robey Theatre’s 2017 Paul Robeson Festival and the 2018 Hollywood Fringe Festival. Her articles have been published in the Washington Post, the Huffington Post, Religion Dispatches, The Humanist Magazine and the L.A. Times. She is also the founder of Black Skeptics Los Angeles and the Women’s Leadership Project, a Black feminist mentoring program for girls of color in South L.A. Her latest novel, Rock ‘n’ Roll Heretic: The Life and Times of Rory Tharpe, was published in March 2021.
Having been taught the ropes by her mother, from rhythm over musicality to a sense of humour and not taking herself too seriously, Charlotte Adigéry got into music from an early age. Through mutual friends (after all Belgium is a tiny country) she was asked by the Soulwax brothers to lip-sync a song of theirs for the ‘Belgica’ soundtrack they were producing at the time. As soon as they heard her voice the acting job quickly turned into a studio session… and another… and another. The Dewaele brothers paired her with DEEWEE-regular Bolis Pupul and soon they started working on a re-enactment of their mutual histories, resulting in lots of heart-to-heart confessions and a local brew by the name of ti’punch, not to mention two EP’s for DEEWEE. Charlotte Adigéry’s music making is all about playing around until she hits a nerve and something feel-good starts bubbling up – following that vein wherever it may lead. For eclectic as her music may sound, combining bits of smartphone-recorded conversation with synths as sticky as molasses, Adigéry’s voice blends all the elements together in a chocolate and vanilla swirl of holistic beats.
