Sophie Lewis | A happy ending for the capitalist family?

Date: 14th Februari 2024

Place: De vooruit Balzaal

Studium Generale welcomes American writer and researcher Sophie Lewis to their stage.

She will address the topic ‘A Happy Ending for the Capitalist Family?’. Following her lecture, Lewis will engage in a conversation with Siggie Vertommen, feminist researcher in gender studies at the universities of Ghent and Amsterdam.

Sophie Lewis acknowledges that the capitalist nuclear family doesn’t always run smoothly. Yet, for many, it feels like the only and inevitable option. Lewis wonders in what ways the nuclear family prevents us from acting and desiring differently. And how we could rethink ‘the family’, thus putting an end to organized scarcity of care.

Both the lecture and the conversation will be conducted in English. There will be an interpreter present to translate from English to Flemish Sign Language.
