Tutor / Junior Lecturer Social Sciences

Are you a lecturer with higher education teaching experience who enjoys the challenge of advising undergraduate students to reach their potential? Do you get excited by mobilising diversity as an asset in the classroom? Do you like to work in an environment with diverse and international students and staff? Then we would love to hear from you.

Amsterdam University College (AUC)  is looking for an Tutor/Junior Lecturer in it’s Social Sciences Team who has affinity with Liberal Arts and Science Education. The position is for a fixed term of 4 years and will include training and the opportunity for obtaining the BKO (Basic Qualification Higher Education Teaching) certification. The position will entail both lecturing and tutoring responsibilities.

One of the defining features of AUC is the tutoring program. Each student is paired with a core faculty member who acts as an academic advisor and mentor as the student becomes a citizen of the academic and learning community, navigates and plans their studies, discovers their interests, develops academically and personally, and finds potential post-graduate pursuits. Though tutors are primarily academic advisors, they are often a student’s first port of call when they encounter personal issues and emergencies, and tutors should be able to provide empathy, a listening ear, a safe environment, and informed guidance at short notice. The tutor-tutee relationship is one of the foundational relationships at AUC, and greatly contributes to the success of the institution as a whole.

AUC’s profile;

  • AUC is a broad Liberal Arts and Sciences bachelor’s programme, offering breadth and depth of learning by focusing on far-reaching themes and real-world problems in science and society, thus crossing the boundaries between science, social science, and the humanities;
  • we aim for academic excellence, offer an honours degree, select our students and attract high caliber staff;
  • we have an international and intercultural focus, reflected in a diverse and international student and staff body, and an international curriculum and classroom setting with English as the language of teaching and learning;
  • we are an engaging academic and social context supported by small class size, an attractive and modern residential college setting, and state-of-the-art facilities;
  • we reach out to the community through off-campus community engagement and  internships.

We are committed to strengthening inclusivity and diversity at AUC, which calls on us to stand firmly against discrimination, and to ensure an environment where every member of our community feels welcome and safe and knows their contribution is valued and respected. In this context we welcome and encourage applications for this post from people of all backgrounds.
