The Faculty of Social Sciences and the Law Faculty are seeking to fill the following full-time (100%) vacancy for a Doctoral Grant in the framework of the BELSPO Brain 2.0 project @ntidote.

Cyberviolence on social media: a research on hate speech and image-based sexual abuse

The researcher will be embedded in the research group MIOS (Media & ICT in Organisations & Society) at the Faculty of Social Sciences’ Department of Communication Studies, which conducts qualitative and quantitative research on digital media use related opportunities and risks, and also in the research group Government and Law at the Law Faculty, which examines the impact of governance and multilevel government on public law and which complements legal analysis with interdisciplinary research methods. The researcher will collaborate in the interuniversity @ntidote project which is intrinsically interdisciplinary including research methodologies from several disciplines (legal sciences, criminology, social sciences and anthropology).

Job description

• You conduct interdisciplinary research on cyberviolence. More specifically, you will investigate what constitutes online hate and image-based sexual abuse based on the current legal framework. You will conduct research on digital natives’ experiences with these forms of cyberviolence and their coping behaviours.
• You will conduct qualitative research (focus groups, in-depth interviews) and a survey among digital natives.
• You publish scientific articles related to the research project of the assignment.
• You collaborate on keeping the social media and website of the project vibrant.
• You will contribute to further grant proposals and engage in a PhD trajectory.
• You take on limited tasks of teaching and research support in the research groups Government and Law, and the research group MIOS.

Profile and requirements

• You hold a master’s degree in the social or human sciences, preferably communication studies, political sciences, sociology, educational sciences, criminology, psychology or another relevant degree.
• You can submit outstanding academic results.
• You have a working knowledge of quantitative research methods and statistical analytic techniques (e.g., SPSS, mplus or R).
• You have working knowledge of qualitative research, more particularly in-depth interviews and/or focus groups.
• You have an excellent command of English and Dutch. Knowledge of French is a plus.
• You like to take initiative, you are a team player and also able to work independently and enjoy accepting responsibility.
• You are quality-oriented, conscientious, creative and cooperative.
• You are strongly motivated to conduct high-level research within the abovementioned domain.
• You are driven to publish your research results in scientific articles.
• Your academic qualities comply with the requirements stipulated in the university’s policy.
• You have excellent writing and communication skills.
• Students in the final year of their degree can also apply.

• We offer a doctoral scholarship for a period of 2 years.
• The planned start date will be September 1^st, 2021
• Your monthly scholarship amount is calculated according to the scholarship amounts for doctoral scholarship holders on the pay scales for contract research staff (Dutch: Bijzonder Academisch Personeel, BAP).
