Engagement arts is looking for writers and artists whose lives are inspired by the work of activist scholar Sara Ahmed. On the 18th of February 2020 Ahmed is visiting Kaaitheater Brussels to give a lecture on “complaint as diversity work”. In order to contextualize her important work in a local setting, we are looking for writers, activists, artists who want to contribute to a DIY/low-budget zine that will be self-published by Engagement and will be distributed at Ahmed’s lecture.

We are specifically looking for, as Ahmed puts it herself, a “(…) writing in which an embodied experience of power provides the basis of knowledge”, as we firmly believe that “(…) theory can do more the closer it gets to the skin.” (p.10)

Any kinds of writing (essays, poems, slogans, short reflections and meditations, …) illustrations and other images are welcome!

We particularly encourage submissions from those operating within academia, activism and contemporary art whose voices are often marginalized by the mainstream canon.

There will be a Collective D.I.T.* Editing Atelier! with the selected material.

The atelier will open with a Collective Writing / Zine Lab on the theme, for those who are interested in creating collective material.

This will all happen on the 27th of January from 17h at Zinnnema (24-26, Rue de Veeweyde, 1070 Anderlecht).

Depending on the nature of text or illustration, a fee will be discussed with all contributors.
