Abstract
This research questions the evolution of social ties in Algeria after the “war against civilians” that tore apart its society in the 1990s. Starting from the enigma of the apparent stability of a regime, which has been going through a crisis of structural meaning for at least three decades, I have used Foucault’s conception of power to understand the reconfiguration of the “field of power” from an infra-state approach.
To do so, I accompanied 25 women, with a diversity of profiles and backgrounds on the scale of the city of Algiers, during their daily travels between 2014 and 2016 in order to analyze their anchorage and potential for spatial and social mobility (motility). From a feminist perspective, I considered gender relations as a transversal approach from which to observe the intertwining of social structures and the power relations they generate.
Based on the “places” assigned to my respondents by their families and communities, as well as the techniques deployed to encourage them to stay there, the investigation highlights the issues raised by the framing of the movement of women’s bodies across spaces (containment device). It also highlights the strategies of resistance implemented by social actors in order to appropriate the field of possibilities in terms of spatial mobility, with a view to a social mobility project (loosening tactics).
This study intends to demonstrate that these forms of local transitions modify the effectiveness of power relations and promote a process of individuation, despite the forces of resistance to change that attempt to maintain the centrality of domestic space on social actors through a communal public space.
