Islam and Feminism: Can I be a Muslim and a Feminist?

The issue of gender and discrimination in Islamic countries is a much-debated topic. Misconceptions and generalisations have made this subject almost controversial, during this event we will openly ask the question: can I be a Muslim and feminist, or is that an oxymoron?

Are Islam and Feminism mutually exclusive?

Womenquake invites you to join this debate where two brilliant women will share what their lifetimes experiences and research have taught them on the subject.

Panellists:
Ghaliya Djelloul is a sociologist at UCLouvain and researcher at Centre interdisciplinaire d’études de l’islam dans le monde contemporain, with an interest in the evolution of gender relations in Muslim societies and communities. During her research, she has published articles and book chapters on spatial mobility of women in Algeria.

Noura Amer is a psychologist and president of Arab Women’s Solidarity Association – Belgium (AWSA-Be). She is a coordinator at the Maison des Femmes-MOVE and researcher at ULB. She is interested in the influence of context on the feminist engagement of Belgian-Moroccan women.
