The Cologne Center for Comparative Politics and the Excellence Cluster ECONtribute (ECONtribute: Markets & Public Policy EXC 2126) are jointly hosting an international workshop on “International and Comparative Political Economy”. The workshop will feature the work of early career researchers working in this area. The workshop will offer four panels on different themes. Individual papers might formulate and address research questions on the micro-, meso- or macro- level and use whatever quantitative, qualitative or mixed-method design is appropriate to answer the question. For each of the four panels, we will host a keynote lecture by an invited scholar who is an expert in this field.

1. Inequality and Redistribution (keynote speaker and discussant: Charlotte Cavaille, University of Michigan)

In an era of rising wealth and income inequality, explaining cross-national variation in inequality and redistributive policy has been of central concern to researchers, commentators and politicians. We invite contributions seeking to explain the political and economic origins and consequences of inequality and redistribution. We are particularly interested in papers exploring the nature of redistributive preferences and variation in social policy, taxation and labor market regimes.

2. The Political Economy of Gender (keynote speaker and discussant: Frances Rosenbluth, Yale University)

We invite contributions that explore the political origins and impact of gender inequality in economic and labor market outcomes, as well as the determination of public policies addressing gender imbalances at home and in the workplace. We further welcome papers considering the impact of economic factors on women’s political preferences, participation and electoral representation. We would particularly welcome papers that engage with these questions in

diverse political contexts (including in the developing world) and make use of new data sources (e.g. social media data or survey and field experiments).

3. Governance and Power in the Digital Economy (keynote speaker and discussant: Anke Hassel, Hertie School of Governance)

The rise of digital giants like Facebook, Amazon and Google has prompted heated debate on the scale and significance of their political and economic influence, and in turn raised questions about how best to govern and regulate their activities. We invite contributions that engage with these questions, and also papers that explore the impact of digitalization on domestic economic and political actors. We would also welcome papers engaging with the international dimension of the modern digital economy – for instance, relating to tax avoidance, enforcement of intellectual property rights and data protection.

4. International Political Economy of Trade and Migration (keynote speaker and discussant: Stefanie Walter, University of Zurich)

In recent years, increasing international trade and migration have met with intense opposition from sections of elite and public opinion across the globe, with significant implications for both international and domestic politics. With this in mind, we invite papers that explore the political and economic implications of rising trade, globalization and migration. We also welcome contributions focusing on the determinants of migration decisions and migration policy, as well as papers on the politics of international trade agreements and international economic integration.

The workshop will accommodate about 12 papers and will take place on November 26-27, 2020 in Cologne.

Submission Details:

Authors must be early career researchers (doctoral, post-doctoral researchers or junior faculty without tenure). Submissions co-authored by junior and senior researchers are also welcomed. The presentation of the paper at the workshop has to be given exclusively by the early career researcher. Interested researchers are invited to submit their paper proposals, indicating the desired panel and including an abstract of about 500 words, to

Authors of accepted papers will be notified by July 13, 2020. Funds are available to cover accommodation and travel expenses of workshop participants. For co-authored work and regardless of whether the co-authors are also early career researchers or not, we can only give funding to one researcher.
